I’ve not actually played any rogue-like titles until this year and it was basically rogue-like overload in 2020, with Hades exploding with its full release in September for multiple platforms and just prior to that, Dead Cells, for which its long awaited Android version was released in June (the iOS version was released last year).

I ended up playing the iOS version of Dead Cells and found it to be a powerful experience on the iPhone. Unlike Hades, this is a 2D rogue-like, metroidvania mash-up (hence roguevania) for which fans of platformers can really enjoy (provided that they brace themselves for the difficulty level).

The game features levels created in retro 2D pixelated galore, and every single playthrough is an unique experience. You get to encounter NPCs that would be selling items, upgrades, the ilk, an assortment of enemies (I hate the shieldbearer), and since it’s also a metroidvania title: all manner of traps.

Fans of Dead Cells on Android and iOS would be happy to now that the creators of the game, Playdigious has just released a new content update dubbed the Legacy Update which brings the game up to v1.6 of the PC and console versions of the game.

Players will get to experience the new difficulty level in Boss Cell 5, experience new biomes, enemies, bosses, weapons, mutations and skills. Excited? If you haven’t got the game already, check it out over here on the App Store or the Play Store.
