When it comes to first-person shooters, I tend to prefer fast-paced, sci-fi types such as Halo, Quake, Doom and Unreal Tournament. While I play Halo: Infinite for its single-player experience (and gorgeous open-world graphics), it was the classics such as Unreal Tournament 2004 and Quake III Arena that popularized some of the multiplayer modes (versus bots) that are part and parcel of modern FPS games. Favourite mode in UT? Onslaught, no questions asked. What about Quake III Arena? It would obviously be Deathmatch.

But when it comes to First-Person Shooters that are more grounded in reality, I’ve always fancied those that are set in a historical setting such as World War II. I was really impressed with the original Call of Duty and its Stalingrad mission. The sheer confusion in the battle I’m not much of a fan of current or future war-based FPS games, those aren’t my cup of tea.

However, I’ve always wanted to play a single-player FPS that is set in the Pacific Theatre of World War II. Imagine playing as a US Marine, trying to make headway through Guadalcanal or Iwo Jima, while trying to survive Japanese banzai charges. That led me to try out Battlefield V a couple of nights ago, having watched the War in the Pacific trailer. Unfortunately, those Pacific-themed maps were multiplayer maps, and I fared quite poorly in one of them, having kept getting sniped by the opposing team.

I guess one would have to wait for a proper single-player FPS-experience through the Pacific theater. Perhaps a remake of the Medal of Honor series?
