I stumbled upon an interesting article on Wired.com about IGE, a company which sells, among other things virtual items, accounts and other stuff you can think of used in MMORPGs such as City of Heroes, World of Warcraft and Guild Wars.

It was pretty funny stumbling onto the article, considering that just a couple of days ago I was reading about PlaySpan. It’s not difficult to mention both IGE and PlaySpan in the same breath, after all, both sell the same thing. However, there’s one key difference.

While the use of IGE is frowned on by players and publishers alike (e.g. in the case of World of Warcraft, published by Blizzard), PlaySpan is the first “publisher-sanctioned” marketplace for virtual goods and subscriptions. How does this work, according to an article in Gamasutra, is by providing developers and publishers “a platform for managing secure micro-transactions, virtual goods sales, global alternative payments, and peer-to-peer trading”.

All this translates to peace of mind for both gamers and publishers. So if you are playing LotRO, Eve Online or even Age of Conan, and looking for something to up your game, check out what PlaySpan has to offer. Click here to find out more.
