Puzzle games have found an ideal home in Nintendo’s consoles from the Game Boy right up to its latest hybrid console, the Switch 2. Thanks to its backwards compatibility to the original Switch, I’ve been able to continue playing Picross S GENESIS & Master System Edition which was released 5 years ago, on this new console. And 5 years after purchasing the game, I’ve finally finished it, specifically its Picross mode.

The game’s Picross mode contains a collection of 150 picture logic puzzles divided across 10 progressively difficult levels. Solving each puzzle unlocks exotic pixel art from retro titles that appeared on the GENESIS and the Master System. The final puzzle revealed Knuckles from Sonic the Hedgehog 3, a game that was introduced back in 1994.

Total time spent to solving these puzzles: 27 hours, 50 minutes and 35 seconds. The developer, Jupiter Corporation, has since released newer Picross titles, a number of them tying into retro games such as those from CAPCOM and KONAMI. The upcoming Picross S Climax is a compilation of 1,020 nonogram puzzles originating from Picross S, Picross S2, Picross S3, Picross S4, Picross S5, Picross S6, Picross S7, Picross S8, and Picross S9.

It will be available as a Game-Key Cart for the Nintendo Switch 2 in December, perfect as a gift for any puzzle-loving Nintendo Switch 2 owner. You can check it out over here.
