Phew, it’s been nearly two years since the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: Booster Course Pass DLC expansion pack was announced and we are finally seeing the last of the 6 waves of the Booster Course Pass being released this month on the 8th of November 2023. My eldest daughter seems to have an uncanny ability to “sniff” a newly released wave and she did ask for a round of Mario Kart last night, much to her younger sister’s delight.

The main appeal of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in my household is that it is a videogame that appeals to everyone. Fast and exciting, with decent, fun graphics and sound to match, along with accessible controls that allow my blind daughter to participate.

The latest wave introduces 8 tracks which are split across two cups, which are the Acorn Cup and the Spiny Cup. Now, remember I mentioned we had 1 round of Mario Kart earlier this evening? Well that meant going through a single cup, and the Spiny Cup was tonight’s selection.

The courses were Rainbow Road from Mario Kart Wii, Rosalina’s Ice World from the 3DS, Bowser Castle 3 from the SNES and Madrid Drive from Mario Kart Tour. Not gonna lie, the courses were really tough, but maybe because I was stuck with the 8BitDo Zero 2, which pales in comparison to the Joy-Con gamepad and the 8BitDo Pro 2 that the two girls were using.

One thing that I noticed was that it was easy to gain the lead with both auto-drive and auto-steer enabled when racing in the 50cc category. Those that do not use those features will have to go and figure out how to drive around those really weird maps. What’s my favourite map out of the 4? Probably Madrid. Least favourite? Bowser Castle…which I fell asleep racing on.

So if you haven’t gotten the Booster Course Pass DLC, you should, since there’s no more waiting around for the course waves to be released and you get the number of courses in Mario Kart doubled from 48 to 96! There’s a whole bunch of new characters to choose from as well, and my favourite out of that lot is Petey Piranha.
