It’s the third quarter of the year, going into the fourth where Christmas will be celebrated and current gen consoles, even the perennially unavailable Sony PlayStation 5 are now easier to obtain than ever before. So what better time to revisit an old 2009 post of this blog (and apparently a popular one as well): The Google Map Guide to Video Game Stores in KL and the Klang Valley.

The Map

The map has now been updated for 2023, and you can access it over here.

To be fair, the list is non-exhaustive. What you see in the list are a number of game stores that have since managed to build a name for themselves, with several branches around the Klang Valley and even across Malaysia along with some newer names as well. Much has changed since 2009 but generally the criteria for inclusion into the map are still the same (albeit with some tweaks):

  • Good reviews on Facebook (previously criteria was good reviews on Lowyat Forum)
  • Personal experience (be it myself or friends/family) with the store, whether through physical or online store purchases.

My personal picks?

  • I’ve gotten nearly all of my consoles (including the Sony PS5, the Xbox Series S, the Nintendo 3DS) from the Gamers Hideout outlet in 1 Utama.
  • Impulse Gaming in Sunway stocks some pretty interesting stuff; I’ve bought an 8BitDo Pro 2 from them, along with a couple of SNES Classic consoles. They have now a Mega Store in the Sungai Besi area.
  • Kyo’s Game Mart weekend setup at Amcorp Mall has a lot of used games and collector-edition consoles.

Official Warranty & Grey Imports

Both the Sony PlayStation 5 and the Nintendo Switch are available with official warranties in Malaysia from Sony Malaysia and Maxsoft respectively. At the same time you can get grey imports (brought in from other regions) for either one as well. However, you should know that PS5 grey imports tend to cost higher due to the scarcity of official units in Malaysia, whereas Nintendo Switch grey imports tend to be slightly cheaper than their official counterparts.

The Xbox Series S and X are not officially supported in Malaysia., and units brought in from Singapore tend to be priced higher than units brought in from either Europe or Japan as it is easier for some shops to claim official warranty from Singapore (do check with the shop first). As general rule of thumb, grey imports will usually come with a much shorter shop warranty (again, check with the shop).

Bundling and Add-Ons

Some shops tend to bundle other stuff into your console purchase, and these may include games and/or accessories such as additional controllers or screen protectors/casings. While a game or two and some accessories may prove useful (especially if you are a first time gamer or getting for someone who is one), bundling will add on to the final bill, so do take note.
