My nine-month old daughter simply loves games with cute characters in them, she enjoys tapping on my wife’s iPhone 5 or my iPad 4 just to see how they react on-screen. Now cute characters are mainly the staple of children games, but once in a while, these feature in games that appeal to a broad spectrum of ages. Abyssal Games‘ latest iOS title, Squid Up, features a lead character that fits the bill.

The iOS App Store is no stranger to jumping games, and Squid Up is one in the mold of Jump O’Clock and Mega Jump, and to a certain degree, Bird Strike. Unlike those games however, Squid Up’s pace is a little slower, and the use of walls enable players to think a little outside the box when it comes to facing obstacles or reaching one of the rotating platforms that are necessary to bring our little squid up and up through the levels.

The coins collected through the levels can be used to upgrade your squid and I highly recommend the extra life to be your first upgrade, otherwise it’s insta-kill when you get hit by rocks or jump onto a spiky platform. The game features colourful levels and very easy to master gameplay, and while there are certain charming “quirks” (see our video review below for the whole jumping from one wall to another shenanigans), I find the game fun to play.

As such, Nineoverten.com rates Squid Up at a 4 out of 5. The game is available for free on the iOS App Store with support for in-app purchases, check it out over here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/squid-up/id601394942
