It’s quite frustrating sometimes when as a reviewer, you set to check out a bunch of games over the weekend, only for the first 2 to crap out on you due to software bugs. That happened to me over the weekend but as most people say, the third time’s the charm, I went ahead and checked out the third game and I was glad that I had done so.

The game is a brand new indie title from Barry Kostjens & Ricardo de Zoete, titled Hyper Breaker Turbo. Yup, they are the folks that brought us Push Panic a few years ago. OK, back to the game. Fans of Arkanoid and Breakout will definitely catch the primary influence for Hyper Breaker Turbo. Players bounce of the ball off a, well, almost concave-shaped, paddle but unlike its retro godfathers, the ball travels and bounces way faster, probably to suit fast-talking Millennials.

That was a bit mean but what can I say, Millennials are the flavour of the month. Anyways, the speed is a welcome change of pace, and more importantly it is tempered with precise, touch-based controls… all you need is a finger to move the paddle. One innovative thing that the guys put into the game that sets it apart from other brick breaking games on the App Store is that each level isn’t a static screen. You actually get to progress through a level like a top-down vertical moving shoot-em-up.

The mind begs to know why hasn’t anyone else implemented this in a brick-breaking game until now. And guess what? This is not the single most awesome thing in the game. The game also features integrated replay recordings (that’s a first) and a global counter for blocks broken, which is an interesting touch.

The colourful, fast-paced 2D graphics seem larger than life when played on the iPad and we are just talking about 1 theme with 25 levels. The other two themes are unlockable at USD 0.99 cents each, one being a neon theme, the other being doodles. Who doesn’t like doodles? Doodles are awesome. IMHO though, the game would be better served being sold at a slightly higher price point with all three themes unlocked, bringing the total number of levels to 75.

You need to buy this game. It’s only USD 1.99; buy it so that Barry Kostjens & Ricardo de Zoete can come up with even more awesome stuff. Nine Over Ten 9/10 rates Hyper Breaker Turbo at a 5 out of 5.
