Remember the Flash-based web game called Smack the Pingu? The game had players hitting Pingu the penguin across an Arctic landscape using a baseball bat to see how far the poor bird will end up. Political correctness and (virtual) animal advocacy aside, the game was pretty fun, and competitive thanks to an online leaderboard. I remember my colleagues from my first job being obsessed with the game during lunch hour, and we were “busy” trying to one-up each other in terms of distance.

Fancy Pants Global’s latest iOS title Zorblobs has some common elements with Smack the Pingu. First up, both games are set somewhere cold (in the the case of Zorblobs, the first few levels are). Secondly, there’s the matter of shooting or hitting something to go over a distance. As mentioned earlier, Smack the Pingu had folks batting penguins, Zorblobs on the other hand, has players shooting all manner of artillery shells at invading Zorblobs, which are akin to zombies from outer space.

In order to score a successful hit, you’ll need to ensure that your artillery at the right path, aim and let loose. There are also different kinds of stuff that you can drop along the path of those cute but dastardly Zorblobs, and these include mines and pitholes. The gameplay is typical of a good casual game, addictive and fun, but if there’s one thing that I take issue with, it would be the controls. They are a bit iffy; and the initial experience was so bad I thought the game was broken.

Once you get used to the controls though, the game is a bag of fun, so do check it out. Nineoverten.com rates Zorblobs at a 4 out of 5. The game is available on the iOS App Store for USD 1.99, check it out over here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/zorblobs/id508485952?mt=8.
