Some games are designed like bubble wrap, they tend to be addictive and you can’t stop popping, I mean playing them. In the case of PubbleBop for the iPhone (yup, it’s a questionable title), the developers take the concept a little higher. Imagine this, the act of popping bubble wrap causes even more bubble wrap to appear. Recipe for game design genius? You bet!

In the game, players are supposed to pop the tail-less tadpole like Pubbles of the same colour, causing them to generate even more Pubbles (of a different colour) for every third Pubble popped. Yup, just as long as you can pop 3 Pubbles or more of the same colour and cause more Pubbles to show up, you should be able to play the game ad infinitum. However there are other challenges to be aware of.

The Pubbles are generally moving downwards and there’s occasionally a sweep that pushes the Pubbles down even faster, so players will have to hurry to pop them before they are out of sight and out of bounds . It’s also a challenge to pop Pubbles of the same colour simply because there are too many of them in the same space at the same time.

Players can be punished severely for mistakes as the level progresses because the Pubbles move downwards at an every increasing rate. Fortunately, there are certain special items that can help arrest the fall. One power-up freezes the Pubbles in place, while another can be used to push the Pubbles upwards to the top of the screen.

This is one nifty little game from Boo Radley Games and the only thing that seems to be missing are Achievements. The competition mode is basically an endless mode and that comes with an online leaderboard. The classic mode requires players to gain a certain level in prior levels before unlocking subsequent levels.

Nine Over Ten 9/10 rates PubbleBop at a 4.5 out of 5, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Check it out over at the iTunes App Store: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pubblebop/id445876648?mt=8. A review code was provided to Nine Over Ten 9/10 for the purpose of this review.
