It’s pretty disappointing sometimes that you spent so much time on a game only to be rewarded with naught. Case in point Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty for the iPhone. The guy happens to be my favourite Marvel superhero, and with a movie in sight, I really wanted to give a good account of myself playing the game.

Now, at first the game came across as re-skinned mash-up of Prince of Persia’s (the old 2D game from the 20th century…remember?) level design and Chop Chop Ninja’s (that non-stop-running-and-jumping-ninja-game from as recently as last year) gameplay. Players control Captain America, but like Chop Chop Ninja, he has this irresistible urge to move forward all the time.

No matter, the first mission consisted of 8 levels designed to teach players how to speed run through levels, use your shield, barge through enemies, jump and cling onto poles, and even run on walls. When you got sick and tired of that, you eventually learn about Super Soldier Powers and takedown moves, which I mentioned last, since they represent the best and most satisfying part of the game.

Players do all these by sliding gestures on the touchscreen and these are context sensitive. The game is not really smart though in determining gestures, but it was fun while it lasted. All this comes to naught (there’s that word again) when the game slows down to a stomach cramp inducing crawl right at the last level in the 2nd mission.

I didnt play through 15 levels (each mission has about 8 levels each) just to see the game fail at a crucial time. This particular level involves players leading Captain America out from an about to explode factory. Naturally a timer is involved but with the super crawl and the game mixing up all your moves, chances of survival = nil.

While I didnt throw the iPhone out of the window due to sheer frustration, I really hope that the developers will work their magic on the game so that it runs on older devices. It deserves nothing less since it started off really well and hey, it’s Captain America. The A on his head doesn’t stand for being…. nevermind.

Nine Over Ten 9/10 rates Captain America at a 2.5 out of 5.
