Remember the classic video game Missile Command? The game’s premise was pretty simple, whereby you are supposed to shoot down ballistic missiles that are raining upon your city. Simple yes, easy to master? Not really.

But all these make up an addictive game which through the annals of history, have been recognised as a retro classic and demanding a 21st-century update. Geppetto Inc. does that by releasing iYamato for the iPhone/iPod Touch.

Instead of missile batteries, you now take control of the AA guns and cannons of the battleship Yamato in an effort to fend off waves enemy aircraft and their various ordanances. Controls are pretty simple, you get to direct the AA guns by moving your thumbs at the bottom corners of the iPhone. Cannons can be fired with a tap at the bottom of the screen, but they’ll need time to reload in-between salvos.

All this makes for a rather exciting experience as the enemy forces are pretty relentless and the big bombs are good at inducing “what the hell, how am I gonna survive that” moments. This fun game sports online leaderboards as well, so get ready to earn some serious bragging rights by being really good at the game.

Best of all, it’s only 99 cents on the iTunes Store. Check it out over here.

P/S: For those history buffs, the Yamato was the largest battleship ever built and was the flagship of the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. Some of you might find it bad taste that the ship is featured in such a game, considering it was sunk in similar circumstances with almost 2,500 personnel lost, but that can be said for any WWII game as well 🙂
