Everyone I know (even the PR practitioners who usually notify me about games to review) are into Diablo III, so it’s pretty amazing that I managed to pry my fingers off my mouse to bring you this week’s Indie Game Developer interview. This week we feature Uri Foox, of Pixafy Web Developers and co-creator of Order of Leisure, which brought you Kings’ Corners for iOS devices (the review for the brilliant game is over here).

[Nine Over Ten 9/10]: Tell us more about yourselves and how you started developing mobile games?

[Uri Foox]: Pixafy is a Technology Partner. As such we are always striving to grow our skills not only for our own knowledge but for our clients as well. Mobile Development has always been something we’ve wanted to start offering and we made a large investment in putting together an amazing Mobile team. As our first order of business we decided to make our own game!

[Nine Over Ten 9/10]: What was the idea behind Kings’ Corners?

[Uri Foox]: I’ve always been a fan of games and wanted to picked something that had a high chance of getting done well and in a short amount of time. We needed to pick a concept that was easy for the team to understand and didn’t require large orchestration of graphics or sounds.

That led to the team going around the room and pitching their favorite card game. At the end we settled on Josh’s idea of Kings’ Corners. We started development in January of 2012 and it was sent to Apple by early April. Given that this is our first game we learned quite a bit and found the whole process very exciting.

[Nine Over Ten 9/10]: How has the response been to Kings’ Corners on the iTunes App Store? Could you describe the process of marketing your games?

[Uri Foox]: Well first we need to take a step back and thank BWKNY for their AMAZING work in getting us exposure. Initially we released the game as $1.99 and after a few hundred downloads we realized that we needed a larger market. We changed the game to be free and now we have a few thousand downloads.

It’s been incredible to see the reception and the feedback users have given us. We’ve got a lot of new features coming that we’ve been hearing from our fans and implementing it for them. As part of the marketing process we tried to go all out: blogs, press, podcasts and reviews.

[Nine Over Ten 9/10]: Could you share with us a little on what you’ll be working on next? Any plans for releasing games on other platforms?

[Uri Foox]: Right now we’re focusing on iOS because that’s where the most demand is and it is a natural fit for what we do. Android is of course next but we don’t have the capacity to do a port of the game given our client work—but it’s coming! We’re working on two new apps next, one is another game—this one more quirky/fun/anyone can jump in and do.

We’re calling it Royal Flush…can’t give you the details yet but get excited. The next is more of a traditional app that takes on a whole new meaning to waking up…

[Nine Over Ten 9/10]: Any words for aspiring game developers out there?

[Uri Foox]: Do it because you love it. The odds of making the next Angry Birds are so small it’s almost like the lottery. It’s great if you win but don’t count on it. Otherwise, have a lot of patience, focus exactly on the features you want to build and get to market as quickly as possible.

South Korean mobile games publisher, GAMEVIL, has produced some really crazy numbers for its first financial quarter in 2012, taking in 16.6 billion KRW in sales, 6.2 billion KRW in operating profit, and 5.2 billion KRW in net profit. Year on year it has seen growth reflecting 160%, 131% and 105% increases respectively.

Taking a closer look at the first quarter, GAMEVIL has fully transitioned into a free-to-play smartphone publisher where 91% of its total sales derived from in-app purchases and 92% of its total sales came from smartphones with iOS and Android. Also, overseas revenues outside of Korea grew 437% establishing itself as a true global publisher with flagship game franchises such as ZENONIA®, Baseball Superstars 2012®, Air Penguin and Cartoon Wars.

GAMEVIL looks ambitiously as it schedules a record of more than 40 games to be released within the year. GAMEVIL will launch 16 titles in the second quarter of 2012, of these 5 will be internal and 11 will be third party published titles. As a publisher of externally developed titles, GAMEVIL has allocated $10M to their Partner Fund last year to encourage publishing of third party titles and thus leveraging the 120 million user downloads also announced today.

“Publishing third party titles has allowed GAMEVIL to explore a wide variety of genres and has continuously contributed to the financial growth of the company.” stated Yong Kuk Lee, Chief Financial Officer of GAMEVIL Inc. “Now that publishing titles on Apple’s App Store and Google Play has been gaining momentum this past quarter, we are very pleased to see strong growth throughout global markets.”

I remember not too long ago about reading on an musical group which used iPhones and iPads as musical instruments. Talk about being avantgarde huh? That musical group can add in a new musical instrument to their repertoire with the release of the Sound Wand app by UK-based indie creative studio Club 15CC (you can trust folks in the UK to come up with some really funky names).

This is the first in the series of apps which leverage on the built-in motion sensors on the iPhone 4 (and above) and the iPad 2 (and above) to create very unique and sophisticated virtual music instruments. Sound Wand allows users to create sublime, original music by moving your device through the air like a conductor – it’s like plucking invisible harp strings which surround you.

According to the developers, the end result is that it is easy for anyone, even the youngest child, to create harmonious music, yet it is sensitive enough for seasoned musicians and even viable for live performance. The app is now available on the iTunes App Store for USD 2.99, check it out over here: http://itunes.apple.com/app/sound-wand-more-than-toy./id514362230

It’s based on Panini’s (the company behind some of the more popular collectible cards) new kids license. As such, the game, which is based around the premise of cars with the souls of animals, is aimed at kids between 5 to 12 years old.

Different cars will fare better in different courses, based on their strengths and the environments in which the courses are based on. There’s also a two player mode which allows players to play through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. The controls are simple enough for even the youngest member of the family to play, as it just involves sliding a finger on the touch screen.

The game is now available on the App Store for USD 0.99. Check it out over here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/carnimalz/id516950045?mt=8

Check this out, Zeniz Gaming Network, a social mobile gaming company owned by The United States Playing Card Company, the folks behind the popular Hoyle playing cards (for some reason, whenever I think playing cards, I think of Hoyle…I guess that’s the power of branding) has come up with a freemium casino app for iOS devices, titled Casino by Zeniz.

I’m thinking it’s an innovate thing that a traditional company, known for physical gaming products, is jumping in on the smartphone/tablet gaming arena and what more in an area it knows best. Casino by Zeniz delivers the most full-featured social casino experience to date for mobile devices, with detailed, high-resolution graphics, a lobby in which players can create custom avatars and, in a later release, view digital entertainment, and an expanding game room of casino favorites with social spins.

Casino by Zeniz features games like Texas Hold ‘em and Social Slots, with a view for expanding the number of games every two months. To download Casino by Zeniz for free, please visit the App Store at http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/casino-by-zeniz/id512974096?l=en&ls=1&mt=8. Casino by Zeniz will release for Android devices on Google Play at a later date.

Having played Luxor Evolved HD for the past few days, I can sum it up in these few words: it’s one crazy game. Not the bad kind of crazy, but the kind where you take the colourful marble shooter of yore, mix it up with Geometry Wars’ retro-visuals and add in a dash of Tiesto. Yup, it’s crazy psychedelic experience that will leave you yearning for more.

The developers at MumboJumbo really turned the game on its head and blasting like-coloured chains of marbles crawling towards your pyramid is not the only thing you do here in Luxor Evolved HD. Taking cue from other “evolved” (read: 21st century remakes of retro games) games out there, Luxor Evolved HD boasts different gameplay modes in the form of bonus levels…and get this…BOSS FIGHTS!

The game also sees the return of those cool level titles; here’s a sample: “Reign of the Heretic King” (the game is probably referring to Akhenatan…. I have National Geographic magazine to thank for this). You would probably stop reading the review if I used the word “awesome” one more time to describe the game, so let me tell you this. Get it now! Nine Over Ten 9/10 rates Luxor Evolved HD at a 5 out of 5.

The game is available on the iTunes App Store for 99 cents. Check it out over here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/luxor-evolved-hd-full/id514363764?mt=8. A review code was provided to Nine Over Ten 9/10 for the purpose of this review.

*Note to 3GS users: The game features graphics that can bring your device to its knees, so be sure to clear all other apps which are running in the background before launching Luxor Evolved HD. Having said that, the game is a universal app, so run in on an iPad and enjoy!
