These two new action figures from Revoltech just came in a few days ago, had they were released earlier, I would have bought them in Hong Kong at the drop of a hat. But no matter, the action figures in question feature the same anime character, albeit him and his split personality. It’s none other than the wanderer himself, Kenshin Himura and his dangerous man-killer (assassin) alter ego, Himura Battosai from the anime/manga Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X).

I’ve watched the anime since I was a kid and remember being enthralled by how amazing it looked. I even started buying manga due to watching Rurouni Kenshin (simply because the manga and anime storylines diverge on some parts). 2011 marks the 15th anniversary of the animation of Ruroni Kenshin. The author Kisaragi Nobuhiro and a large number of fans have wanted to see the Hiten Mitsurugi-Ryu moves in their display shelves, now Revoltech release a pair of action figures for the celebration.

Yamaguchi Studios analyzed Kenshin and his moves when they create the different parts. The flexible joints allows Kenshin to unleash his power and the display stand supports him when he leaps into the air. Each of the packages come with the drawn sword, the sheathed sword and the half drawn sword. His eyes are extremely sharp during the fights, change the face pieces to have him glare at his hidden enemies from side to side. Dust flies when he lashes out, the white effect part in the box is the materialization of the force

Shunya Yamashita and Kotobukiya are at it again as Wonder Woman joins the ranks of the DC Bishoujo (Pretty Girl) Collection  of 1/7 scaled pre-painted PVC figurines. You’ve probably have read that Anne Hathaway is the new Catwoman in Christopher Nolan’s third Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises. While I think she would make a good choice, I doubt whether her portrayal would be as hot as what turned up on Play-Asia just only recently. I like both Star Wars and Star Trek. Both are well-loved space-based sci-fi franchises, and while both share similarities (iconic space ships, interesting leading men and women), both diverge in terms of “setting”. Star Wars is perceived as a fun, adventurous romp through space, where as Star Trek, has all the seriousness of a Sim-something game, or Civilization, in space.

It’s the fun part as well as continuity that are the main reasons why I keep re-watching Star Wars movies, with my favourites being Episode III and Episode V. I think my brother knows this as well and got me a LEGO version of an ARC-170 Starfighter for my birthday. This is the precursor to the X-Wing and it saw plenty of action in the Clone Wars. It took me quite a while to assemble it, more than an hour, but the results is a pretty incredible looking model with moving S-foil attack wings and missiles!

I took a picture of it sitting on top of a paperback novel (Hunters of Dune to be precise), to give an idea how big this thing is. It’s huge, and way bigger than the Titanium series Ultra Diecast Slave 1 (by Hasbro) that I have hanging around on my bookshelf. Now if someone can get me an X-Wing…

Back when I was a kid, my dad used to get me issues of Quest magazine, a partworks magazine collection about science published by Marshall Cavendish. If you are unfamiliar with the term partworks, it basically means a written publication, released as a series of planned magazine-like issues over time. In the case of Quest, each issue can be separated into separate topics and stored inside binders with colour coded sections. The complete collection, consisting of 3 binders of collected issues, is somewhat like an encyclopedia on science.

I noticed a new partworks collection yesterday at the local Borders, called the DC Comics’ Super Hero Collection. It sounds tacky and while it comes with the pre-requisite magazine (and the binder is coming in Issue 2….I think), each issue comes with a hand-painted, lead-cast collector’s edition figurine of the featured superhero! In the case of Issue 1, which is on the newsstands now, the featured superhero none other than my favourite, Batman.

The magazine portions details the character, the greatest Batman stories, the supporting characters and the genesis of the idea in creating Batman, it’s nothing much if you have something like The Essential Batman Encyclopedia (which I do, having bought it for a song), but if you don’t it’s an OK primer to the Dark Knight. The star of the issue is definitely the figurine. I’m keeping in in-box (took off the shrink-wrapped, but never gone to the business of setting the little guy free from his plastic confines), and I think it’s pretty well worth the money.

DC Comics’ Super Hero Collection is a bi-weekly release. The first issue is now at an introductory price of RM 19.90, subsequent issues will have a price tag of RM 29.90.  If you were to ask me, I would say the magazine is worth buying for the figurine alone. Looks like I’ve to add this to the budget, in addition to the other two magazines that I buy on a regular basis, EDGE and Retro Gamer.
