Zombiesaurus Games‘ latest iOS title Soul Grinder is a pretty cool title, so much so we decided to do our very first video review with Soul Grinder as the subject matter. The game is a 2D arcade shmup and a pretty tough one at that. Check out our video review below or read on to find out more about the game.

I was thinking along the lines of games such as Jetpack Joyride before I played Soul Grinder. The comparison was easy to draw upon, given the similar looking style of play. I found out that I was wrong about that right after my first play through. Not to take away anything from Halfbrick’s masterful casual gameplay showcase but Soul Grinder is old-school toughness epitomized.

For a shmup, the hitbox afforded to the players is sadistically large, and you only get one life every time you start a level. With this in mind, the controls were kept as simple as possible so that players can concentrate on several simple things: shooting zombies, collecting souls and gold coins, and avoiding getting trapped or hit by obstacles.

Soul Grinder features 24 levels, and players are encouraged to play through them over and over again in order to obtain high scores. The variables here are the power-ups that you can purchase to boost your chances in scoring more points. These power-ups and character masks can be purchased using the souls and gold coins obtained in each level.

The game is tough and merciless, and we like it! Nineoverten.com rates Soul Grinder at a 4 out of 5. The game is available on the iOS App Store for just USD 0.99.
