Word Quest (iPhone) Game Review: This is Fun!

Everyday I look forward to the iPhone game review requests that appear in my inbox. Well, maybe not so in the case of match-3 games. I mean come on, if you are thinking of creating a match-3 game, the genre is simply saturated on the iPhone. So I’m just saying that you will be better off going back to the drawing board coming up with something more compelling.

Anyways, I’ve digressed. Yesterday morning was pretty interesting as I received several interesting review requests and one of them was for a word search game. It’s as if someone read my mind because I love word search games. As a kid I used to have this booklet full of word search puzzles, the only thing was I had to use pencils (instead of a pen) to circle the words so that I can later on erase and replay those puzzles.

Having said that, Apostek Software’s Word Quest for the iPhone is actually a pretty good word search game. For starters, there are 20 different categories of word lists, ranging from frequently used American terms to Canadian TV shows. Such a huge amount of words and randomly generated puzzle boards would keep just about any word search enthusiast happy and you can count me in as one of them. Just be warned that if you are unfamiliar with a particular category, those words just don’t seem to pop-up.

In each round, players are given a list of words to find. Players will just need to tap and drag their finger on the board to spell out the word and the two difficult levels differ in the number of points for each word found. Finding all the words in less than 2 minutes results in bonus points being given. The controls in this sense work very well and the graphics are functional without looking amateurish.

As for bragging rights, you can actually share your score over on Facebook or Twitter once a level is over. Nice touch eh?

I can only find fault with the online leaderboards. While the developers mention that the online leaderboards will be shared with the Android version of Word Quest, I was already facing problems uploading my score from within the iPhone app. Nothing seems to happen. Hopefully this will be fixed on the next update, but in the mean time, I’m perfectly fine without the online leaderboards.

Word Quest is now available for the iPhone for USD 0.99. Check it out over here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/word-quest/id354655225?mt=8. Highly Recommended.

Thanks a lot for the great review, Jason. We have taken note of the issue with the online leaderboards and we’re looking to fix that ASAP. We’ll be adding more categories and more words in the next update.

Hope you enjoy Word Quest for a long time. 🙂

I found another similar app with the same name but has a totally different interface and game modes than the one you featured. It was free when I downloaded it and it’s integrated with openfeint. also it has a dictionary lookup on the words you dont know. 🙂

There’s this really awesome new word game Skitrix on iTunes. It is a mixture of scrabble and tetris, and got featured in iTunes under word games. Check it out and review it if you can!
