Metal Gear Solid 4 and First Impressions
I’ve got a confession to make, I actually fell asleep watching my brother play the first 10 minutes of Metal Gear Solid 4. There were tiny bits of player involvement interspaced between long cutscenes.
Some of them (like the part where Snake outruns a Gecko and then proceeds to hide in plain sight from two of those Mechs), made me ask myself wouldn’t it be better if the player handled that himself instead of cutting to a cutscene.
The vibe that I’m getting from MGS4 is as if the game were an interactive movie and if this was a piece of hardware it would have been a poor sell given its sucky first impressions. But since this is a game, one would have to look past the first 5 minutes and dwell deeper into it.
Wish me luck and hope that I don’t fall asleep.
